Food Explorers Summer Camps

Become a Food Explorer this summer and learn all about nutritious and delicious food! You’ll explore the five food groups through taste tests and games, and make delicious recipes. In this tasty camp, you’ll also learn about the importance of eating locally, foods from different cultures, food marketing and added sugars. Be prepared to taste new foods, learn new skills and new recipes. All recipes will be nut free, snack and supper will be included daily. This program is held at the Simsbury Farms Apple Barn.
 
Baking is fun! Join Food Explorers for a week of baking! Improve your baking skills by creating two new recipes each day, learning the basics like pastry, dough and more. Plus, you’ll learn all about food, cooking and nutrition as you go! Each day will feature a snack and meal. All recipes are nut free and some will contain dairy and/or eggs.
 
Taste the Rainbow! Join Food Explorers to Taste the Rainbow! Explore new flavors, cooking techniques and recipes by delving into a new color each day, learning all about foods of that color. You’ll also discover fun facts about food and nutrition through interactive games and activities between recipes. Each day will feature a snack and meal. All recipes are nut free and some will contain dairy and/or eggs.
 



SUMMER 2021 COVID POLICY - Campers and staff must wear a face mask while participating in this indoor program. (For 2022 we will follow any BOE & Town policies for indoor mask wearing that are in place at the time of the program.)

About the Instructor
About our Instructor - Katie Shepherd is a Registered Dietician. After graduating from UCONN and spending some time working in community nutrition, Katie decided to start Food Explorers, as a way of combining her two passions: nutrition and educating children.

Behavior Policy
Rules, Behavior, and Discipline Policy
Campers will be responsible for following ALL camp rules as listed below:
*Campers must be respectful to other campers, staff, and facilities and equipment at all times.
*Campers must remain in designated camp areas at all times unless escorted by a counselor.
*Campers must stay with their specified counselors at all times.
*Campers must use appropriate language with other campers and staff at all times.
*Campers are only permitted to leave camp when they are signed out by a parent/guardian or other
authorized person.
All children are expected to behave in a proper and respectful manner. We will not tolerate any physical violence, name calling, foul language, destruction of property, or any other behavior deemed inappropriate by the staff. In accordance with the severity and frequency of the behavior, a behavior tracking form may be completed and kept on file. Parents will be notified and receive a copy of any such form. If warranted, the Recreation Department reserves the right to dismiss or suspend any child from the program. No refunds will be given.
