Are you ready to step up, take responsibility, and train for a role where your actions truly matter? The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification course is an intense, rewarding experience designed for strong swimmers who want to become confident, capable lifesavers. This is more than a class, it’s training for real-world emergencies, leadership, and lifesaving decision-making. This blended learning course combines a 7-hour online component with 20 hours of hands-on, in-person training, where participants will master surveillance skills, rescue techniques, emergency response, teamwork, and professional responsibility. Online course access will be sent two weeks prior to the start date to allow time for preparation.
Course Prerequisites
To participate, candidates must be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled class session and successfully complete two prerequisite swimming skill evaluations on Day One.
Prerequisite Skill Test #1: Swim–Tread–Swim Sequence
- Enter the water, fully submerge, resurface, and swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination
- Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only
- Swim an additional 50 yards using front crawl or breaststroke
Prerequisite Skill Test #2: Timed Deep-Water Retrieval (1 minute, 40 seconds)
- Swim 20 yards starting in the water (goggles not permitted)
- Surface dive to 7–10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
- Swim 20 yards on your back, holding the object at the surface with both hands
- Exit the pool without using a ladder or steps
Course Completion Requirements
To earn certification, participants must:
- Successfully pass pre-testing on Day One
- Attend 100% of all class sessions (attendance is mandatory)
- Achieve a score of 80% or higher on written exams
- Demonstrate proficiency during final rescue and skills testing
Important Program Notes
Lifeguard Training is physically demanding and mentally challenging. Participants should expect rigorous swimming, rescue practice, scenario-based training, and independent online study.
