Lifeguard Training

This is the Red Cross blended learning course to become a Lifeguard. It will consist of a 7 hour online course and 20 hours of in-person training. Online course information will be sent out two weeks prior to class starting date.

Course Prerequisites 
To participate in the Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) course, participants must: 
-Be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the Lifeguarding course.
-Successfully complete the two prerequisite swimming skills evaluations: 

Prerequisite 1
: Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest:
-Jump into the water and totally submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front  crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. (Swimming on the back or side is not  permitted. Swim goggles are allowed) 
-Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only  the legs 
-Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both o

Prerequisite 2: Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds: 
-Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim  goggles are not allowed).
-Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 – 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound  object. 
-Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point,  holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face out at or near the surface. 
-Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. 

In order to pass the course you must:
-Pass the pre-testing on day one
-Attend 100% of all class sessions, attendance is mandatory
-Score 80% or better on written exams, and passing the final skills testing. 


Please understand that Lifeguard Training is an extensive physical program that requires significant skill level and independent reading. Please make sure that Lifeguard Training is an appropriate fit before you sign up.

Two courses to choose from - space is limited to 10 students per section, with a minimum of 5 students

Section A  -Class schedule:  June 18 - July 5 - 7:45-9:45am
                                         Monday-Friday (no class on Wednesdays)
 
Section B  -Class schedule:  July 8 - July 26 - 7:45-9:45am
                                          Monday-Friday (no class on Wednesdays)

* Upon successful completion of the course, students will have the opportunity to interview for 2024 Simsbury Recreation Lifeguard positions, based on staffing needs

Course fee - includes Red Cross Certification fee - $250
